Times of Women

Films about the long way towards gender equality

Since 1911, women around the world have been celebrating International Women's Day to draw attention to women's rights and gender equality. The fact that this is still necessary today is shocking and actually unimaginable. But Simone de Beauvoir's sober admonition still holds true: if political conditions change, women's rights will quickly disappear. The annual events to mark International Women's Day focus on different themes and are usually of transnational relevance, as women around the world continue to be disadvantaged in many areas of life. Film also plays an important role, whereby the medium can be both a curse and a blessing: Women are also severely underrepresented in film (creation), but at the same time, committed films on the subject reach many people. With this in mind, our collection presents films in an emphatically "disordered" and open, but hopefully inspiring context: films about the long road to equal rights, portraits of women and works about women who are impressive in many aspects.
