Female life plans

From the holdings of the Deutsche Kinemathek: Films by Women

The Deutsche Kinemathek archives numerous feature films, documentaries and short films by West and East German women filmmakers that shed light on the cinematic and political awakening of women in Germany. This collection brings together works by West German women filmmakers who made their lifeworld and everyday experiences the subject of their films. Since 1966, new narrative methods have been tried out, and female protagonists have appeared on the screen who were different from the female figures known until then. In many ways, the films bear witness to the search for a self-determined cinematic expression that unites many female directors of the post-war generation and makes their works interesting to this day. The films have one thing in common above all: the will for self-reflection and subjectivity, for a new cinematic self.
